You don’t have to earn your rest — and here’s why we’re done justifying our existence

I heard someone say recently: “I think we’ve finally earned our vacation.”

They weren’t talking about the cost. They were talking about whether or not they ‘deserved’ to rest.

And it stopped me in my tracks. Because this wasn’t about money, it was about permission.

About the quiet belief so many of us carry: I can rest…but only if I’ve done enough to earn it.

This reminds me of an old story about two men in a woodcutting contest…

They were competing on opposite sides of a wood shed. They could not see each other, but they could hear the crack each time the others’ blade split the wood. One went at it nonstop, barely looking up. The other took breaks.

Over and over again, one would stop while the other kept going with relentless fervor, taking advantage of what he could only imagine was the other man’s laziness.

At the end of the day, the man who rested had chopped significantly more wood.

The other man, drenched in sweat, exhausted, and confused, asked:

“How did you beat me? I worked the entire time.”

And the reply?

“You thought I was just resting. But during those breaks, I was sharpening my blade.”

It’s a good story. One that gets shared a lot now in productivity circles. Because rest is finally becoming part of the conversation.

Rest as a strategy. Rest as performance optimization. Rest as a means to an end.

But here’s the thing…

I don’t want rest to be part of the strategy.

I want it to be part of our existence.

What Cosmo taught me about owning energy…

When I look at my cat, Cosmo, I don’t see guilt when he naps.
I don’t see him curling up in the sun, wondering if he’s done enough to deserve it.

He’s not performing calm — he just is.

He rests because rest is natural.
He receives because receiving is natural.
He owns his energy because there’s nothing to prove.

This stirred a thought:

Where in my own life am I still asking for permission to pause?

Where am I trying to ‘justify’ what should simply be honored?

Three energetic shifts to stop justifying your existence:

1. Replace “earned” with “allowed”

You don’t need to earn your next exhale. You don’t need to justify joy. Start noticing where you’ve internalized the belief that ease requires explanation.

2. Rest without performance

Real rest isn’t transactional. It’s not a reward for suffering. It’s a return to truth. What if you rested not *so* you could do more — but simply because you’re worthy of peace?

3. Own your presence like Cosmo

Walk into the room like you belong there — not like you’re waiting for someone to validate your seat at the table.

Let your energy take up space.

Let your existence be enough.

This isn’t about productivity. It’s about permission.

Rest doesn’t make you lazy. It makes you ready.
Ease isn’t weakness — it’s wisdom.

You don’t have to spiral in guilt every time you slow down.
You don’t have to earn your softness.
You don’t have to perform your peace.

You just get to be.

✨ Let’s stop justifying our existence.
🔥 Let’s start owning it.

Because you were never meant to prove you’re worthy of rest.

You were born already enough.
